Walter R. Eberlein, M.D.
Dr. Walter Eberlein, son of the late circuit court judge Michael G. Eberlein and Mrs. Eberlein, died at Fort Lauderdale, Fla., on June 5, 2003, at age 81.
Dr. Eberlein graduated from Shawano High School in 1939, valedictorian of his class, editor of the high school annual, active in forensics, member of the high school debate team that won the Wisconsin state championship. He participated in the national championship held in Oklahoma City. Two years later he won the Wisconsin state championship for extempore speaking and attended the national championship in Ohio, followed by a summer scholarship to the University of Denver. He was awarded a scholarship to Harvard after completing premed studies. He attended and graduated from Harvard Medical School. He joined the Army Medical Corps, was base surgeon at the Air Force Station in Shanghai, China. He completed residencies in pediatrics and internal medicine at the Mayo Clinic, Johns Hopkins Medical School, and the University of Zurich, Switzerland. He then joined the faculty of Children’s Hospital, University of Pennsylvania Medical. At the time of his retirement he was chief of pediatric endocrinology. He left his entire estate to Children’s Hospital for research.
Private services will be held. Internment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery next to his parents.
He was preceded in death by one sister and three brothers. One brother, Frederic C. Eberlein of Shawano survives.
