William A Reichel (1864-1915)

SUCCOMBS TO INROADS OF AN INSIDIOUS DISEASE AFTER A FIGHT OF TEN MONTHS
FIFTY-ONE YEARS OLD
Funeral Will Be Held Tomorrow Afternoon At House And At St. Jacobi Church

William Reichel died at his home in this city Tuesday afternoon, after an illness which has lasted since March of the present year. His malady was cancer of the thyroid gland. Every possible attempt had been made to restore him to health but to no avail. Mr. Reichel will go down in the memory of the people as an honest, hard-working man, the soul of industry and integrity. His accumulations came to him entirely through thrift and saving by himself and his estimable wife.

William August Reichel was born in Losenstein, Regenwaldt, Germany, April first 1864. He came to America [with] his parents at the age of three, living in New London for two years. There he lost his father, by death. In 1869 he came with his parents to Shawano county and here he has remained. At the age of nine years, the lad lost his mother, and he was left an orphan. In 1885, he was married to Kathryn Anna Eberlein, sister of Fred and M. G. Eberlein. During his early married life he was employed by the railroad as a section man. Even in those days, he and his young wife were able to lay aside each month a portion of their earnings. Eventually he assumed control of the ice business which he ran up to a shot time ago. The children are: Herman, William, Frederick and Emil, and a daughter, Mrs. Franklin B. Sweeny, of Canon City, Colorado. Mrs. Sweeny has been with her father for the last two months, and left for her home in the West the morning on which her father died. Owing to the nervous strain under which she had been under, she was not recalled. All of the other children will be present. Mr. Reichel had two sisters, Mrs. M. Rash, who died in 1889, and Miss Joanna Sumnick who has been with him during his illness.

The funeral will be held Friday afternoon at 1:30 at the house and at 2:00 at the St. Jacobi church of [photocopy is incomplete]

Frederic C Eberlein (1919-2010), Frederick A Eberlein (1875-1956)

Frederick Augustus Eberlein, pioneer Shawano county fur farmer, died at Shawano at 2:15 o’clock Friday afternoon after a illness of one and one-half years. He was 81.

Mr. Eberlein was born in the town of Herman in Shawano county on March 19, 1875, the son of Frederick and Catherine Eberlein. He lived in the Shawano area all his life and attended schools in Shawano and received his law degree from the University of Wisconsin.

IN NOVEMBER 1900, he was married to the former Kitty King who passed away in 1903. He was married to Alwina Duecker on April 20, 1910, and they spent eight winters in Arizona for reasons of Mr. Eberlein’s health.

Active in civic affairs,  Mr. Eberlein was District Attorney in Shawano county for four years and a member of the Masonic lodge and the Rotary club. A lawyer by profession, he was the senior member of the Eberlein and Eberlein law firm  from 1904 to 1917 and he also served on the Shawano County Board for several years. He practiced with his brother, the late Michael G. Eberlein, who was circuit judge at the time of his death.

Ill health forced him to discontinue the practice of law when doctors advised him to be out of doors. He then (1917) gave up the legal profession for fur farming and cattle raising. He also was interested in potato farming.

He was very active in the Wisconsin Fur Breeders Association, serving as its secretary for many years. He was an optimist by nature and did not allow his physical handicaps to seriously curb him in his work or dim his hopeful outlook on life.

By a strange coincidence, Frederick A. Eberlein was succeeded in the office of district attorney by a nephew 50 years to the date that the elder Eberlein took the office himself.  The nephew is the present district attorney, Frederic C. Eberlein. F. A. Eberlein took over the office January 5. 1903, and “Fritz” assumed similar duties Jan. 5, 1953.

Survivors include his wife and a son by his first marriage, Frederic Eastman Eberlein, a fur farmer at Shawano R. 1. Also surviving are two grandchildren and a brother, Charles Eberlein of Shawano.

FUNERAL SERVICES will be held 2 p.m. Monday at the Schweers Funeral Home in Shawano with the Rev. W. E. Williamson officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Shawano. Masonic rites will be held at graveside.

Friends may call at the Schweers Funeral Home from this evening until the time of the service.

Members of Lodge 170 F and A.M. are asked to meet at the Masonic Temple at 1:30 p.m. Monday to prepare for participation in the rites for Mr. Eberlein.

Patricia R James (1923-1998)

Patricia J. Eberlein, 75, a University of Buffalo professor emerita, mathematician and one of the nation’s earliest female computer scientists, died Tuesday (Aug.11, 1998) in her Buffalo home after a long battle with lung cancer.

Ms. Eberlein was the first and, to date, the only woman to head UB’s computer science department. She was acting chairwoman in 1971-72 and chairwoman from 1981 to 1984.

Born Patricia James in Washington, D.C., she attended the Shipley School and received her bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the University of Chicago in 1944.

After a stint as a pilot flying planes from manufacturing plants to military bases during World War II, she had a brief career as a fashion model in New York City, then married and operated a ranch in South Dakota.

Divorced and the single mother of two children, she resumed her education and earned a master’s degree and doctorate at Michigan State University.

In 1956, she became a research mathematician for the Institute of Advanced Study’s Electronic Computer Project in Princeton, N.J. The computer created under this project was designed by John von Neumann, the father of modern computing, and now is in the Smithsonian Institution.

In 1957, she went to the University of Rochester, where she was a research associate and then the assistant director of analysis at the university’s computing center.

She joined UB’s new computer science department in 1967 as an associate professor, commuting from Rochester to Buffalo until she moved here in 1976. She became a full professor in 1975 and retired in 1996.

As chairwoman, she significantly increased the amount of sophisticated computer equipment in the department.

Her research specialty was numerical analysis, particularly linear algebra and combinatorial algorithms.

In 1984, she received a Visiting Professorship for Woman Award from the National Science Foundation. In 1988, she was a visiting senior scientist at Argonne National Laboratory.

She was one of the original members of the Gatlinburg group, which now numbers more than 400 researchers.

She served on several national editorial and review boards and was one of the earliest women elected to the Council of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics.

As a member of many professional societies, she was active in the Association for Computing Machinery, the American Mathematical Society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Association for Women in Mathematics.

She often spoke on panels about the need to attract more women to study mathematics and computer science.

She was the widow of William Eberlein, a member of the mathematics faculty at the University of Rochester, who died in 1986.

Surviving are four daughters, Sarah Wells of Oak Park, Ill., Mary Wells of Rochester, Kristen of Durham, N.C., and Kathryn Klaber of Cleveland Heights, Ohio; three sons, Patrick of Chapel Hill, N.C., Michael of Amherst, Ohio, and Robert of Glendale [sic], Md.; a brother, William S. James of Bloomfield Hills, Mich.; 12 grandchildren; and a great granddaughter.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in Unitarian Universalist Church, 695 Elmwood Ave.
